Stock index futures contracts now provide the financial community with the same price protection principles used by agricultural interests in the U.S. for more than a hundred years. The author describes index construction, compares and contrasts three widely used indexes, and provides some ideas on how to use these tools on a daily basis. Of notable interest is his demonstration that not all stock indexes are created equal.
