Electron diffraction has been used to observe in situ HgxTiS2 (1.24 > x ≥ 0.00) guest-layer structural behavior as a function of temperature. At low temperature (−170 °C), Hg forms well-ordered incommensurate one-dimensional guest chains. Heating initiates thermally induced chain-axis motion, interchain disorder, and deintercalation. At higher temperatures, a novel guest-layer partial-melting transition occurs prior to full deintercalation. The partially melted Hg regions exhibit local hexagonal order and a weak orientational relationship with the host.
