A high degree of correlation was found between the techniques of grain density and track autoradiography in a study of natural phytoplankton communities. Because it becomes increasingly difficult to distinguish tracks from closely grouped silver grains with increasing exposure times, the track method is often restricted to the most photosynthetically active species. Grain density autoradiography enables comparisons of the activity of species with a wide range of metabolic intensity.
