Both the Age-Related Eye Disease Study (AREDS) 1 and AREDS 2, combined with the analysis of polymorphisms in complement factor H and age-related maculopathy susceptibility 2 genes, provide robust evidence for the value of prophylactic treatment of age-related macular degeneration using zinc, antioxidants (beta-carotene, vitamins C and E, lutein and zeaxanthin) or a combination of both these treatments. The implementation of this knowledge in general ophthalmic care can be expected to have a significant effect on public health.
