As our increasing awareness of diversity in our world impels us to explore new ways to create community that honor the integrity of our differences, empathy will be an essential quality for building bridges of understanding. Drawing upon research in cognitive ways of knowing and the development of relational selfhood, different educational strategies for promoting empathy are suggested.
