The point is made that the relation between the family and the school is fundamentally a relation between mothers and the school. Further, the position of mothers in the family must be grasped in order to understand the articulation of particular families to the school. In this, the feminist critique of the family becomes central. Exploring the talk of some elementary teachers in relation to the feminist critiques of the ideology of motherhood and theories of maternal deprivation leads to the claim that a feminist perspective is central in the education of teachers.
