Sudden cardiac death in athletes is an event requiring prevention, necessitating knowledge of its principal causes and the optimal diagnostic approaches.
Cross-Sectional (n=274)
Portuguese sports clubs generally comply with basic pre-participation cardiovascular screening laws, but advanced imaging like echocardiography is underutilized primarily due to cost.
Introduction: Sudden cardiac death in athletes is an event that everyone wants to prevent, and it is necessary to know what principal causes are and the best way to diagnose them. Methods: Research on Pubmed using articles published between 2011 and 2021 and the creation of a questionnaire answered by Portuguese clubs. Results: The data acquired was accordant to the recommendations in Portugal. The echocardiogram is not regularly used. Conclusion: The use of the echocardiogram in athletes should be studied. There should also be a note on the necessity of better supervision of federated athletes to make sure they carry-out the pre-participation evaluation required by law.
