IN 1955 Leuallen and Carr,§ after a study of 436 patients with pleural effusion, reported in this journal that the specific gravity of the fluid was of limited value in differentiating the transudates due to congestive heart failure from the exudates due to inflammatory diseases and neoplasms. The concentration of protein in the fluid seemed to be more accurate in this differentiation. As a result, measurement of the specific gravity of pleural fluid was discontinued at the Mayo Clinic, and the concentration of protein in the fluid has been determined almost routinely.
