16 cirrhotic patients with intrapulmonary vascular dilatations (IPVD) but without changes in arterial oxygenation (not fulfilling criteria for hepatopulmonary syndrome), from an initial series of 56 cirrhotic patients on a waiting list for orthotopic liver transplantation.

Evolution of pulmonary parameters (contrast-enhanced echocardiography and arterial blood gases) to assess progression to hepatopulmonary syndrome (HPS)surrogate

In a small prospective cohort of cirrhotic patients with intrapulmonary vascular dilatations, pulmonary parameters remained stable over 2 years without progression to hepatopulmonary syndrome.

Limitations

Very small final sample size (n=4) due to high mortality and transplantation rate
Cannot exclude the possibility of progression to HPS in the 12 patients who died or were excluded before follow-up testing
