In the Watson-Crick hypothesis for DNA replication the forces that are known to hold together the double stranded DNA helix are also thought to be responsible for selecting the incoming nucleotides (Watson and Crick, 1953). In this hypothesis the enzyme plays no selective role, but is concerned only with connecting those deoxy-nucleotides selected by the parental DNA strand to the growing point of the daughter strand (Watson, 1965).
