Letting go! Smart polymer gels of agarose or poly(N-isopropylacrylamide) containing nanostructured carbons (single-walled carbon nanotubes or nanohorns) undergo marked phase transitions upon irradiation with an NIR laser. In particular, DNA–nanocarbon conjugates encapsulated in gels (see picture) are released by NIR laser irradiation. Our systems provide an important basis for designing not only drug-delivery systems, but also photoresponsive artificial muscles, switches, memory devices, and so on.
