Although Israel has a centrally directed educational system, prov1s1on is made for teachers to have considerable scope for implementing their own curriculum thinking. Such a system, it is argued, permits a desirable combination of teacher autonomy and expert-led curriculum development. In assessment, a major part has always been played by school-based grading within the national examination system.
