A number of species representing members of the Cyanophyta, Rhodophyta, Heterokontophyta, Cryptophyta, Dinophyta, Euglenophyta, and Chlorophyta have been analyzed for their specific patterns of photoassimilatory products. It is shown that the kinetics of 14C-labelling during photosynthetic carbon assimilation are indicative for accumulation of certain compounds. Among the accumulated low-molecular weight carbohydrates monosaccharides, disaccharides, alditols (polyhydroxy alcohols), and simple heterosides are found. Occurrence and distribution of such compounds are in general characteristic for the different algal classes and are in some cases useful parameters for a (bio)chemical circumscription even of lower taxa at the ordinal or the generic level.
