The field desorption of Cs from tungsten has been investigated at low coverage. The results can best be explained on the basis of a polar groundstate and suggest that an adiabatic transition is involved in the desorption process. On this basis the polarizability of adsorbed Cs is found to be close to that of the free atom. The results are very similar to those obtained with Ba.
