GELLY. Control of tidal volume during rebreathing. J. Appl. Physiol. 37(4): 475-478. 1974.-In man, there is a wide interindividual range in ventilatory response to COS, and we examined the ven-tilatory response of a group of normal subjects to determine to what extent body size, tidal volume, or respiratory frequency influenced this range. Using the Read rebreathing method, the response to CO2 of 17 subjects was assessed in terms of ventilation (v~/Pcoz), tidal volume (VT/PCO~), and frequency (f/Pco & and related to body size, expressed as the vital capacity (VC). Ventilatory re-sponse was found to be significantly correlated with vital capacity (P < O.OOl), by use of a linear regression, and when ventilatory response was expressed in percent VC/mm per mmHg PCOZ the range of the ventilatory responses was halved. The range of VT/ PC02 was from 0.01 to 0.40 l / mmHg, tidal volume response being significantly related to total ventilatory response (P < 0.001).
