Excess mortality in people with epilepsy (PWE) has long been recognized.1 Deaths in PWE may be attributed to the underlying disease, epilepsy-related causes, or unrelated causes.2 In this issue of Neurology ®, Nevalainen et al.3 report a systematic review and meta-analysis of published data on the topic. They found that the pooled mortality in PWE was threefold higher than in the general population, which was largely driven by those with symptomatic or cryptogenic epilepsies and those with persistent seizures.
