The self-assembly process of decanethiol (CH 3 (CH 2 ) 9 SH) on Au(111) in a very dilute (ca. 0.3 μM) heptane solution was monitored using a scanning tunneling microscope in situ in real time for the first time. The initial stripe structure formation followed by the two-dimensional island growth leading to the √3 × √3 structure was observed.
