Why the study?
How do plasma cAMP and cGMP responses to insulin-induced hypoglycaemia and methacholine differ between hyperthyroid, hypothyroid, and normal individuals?
Population
Normal volunteers, hyperthyroid patients, and hypothyroid patients
Comparison
Insulin-induced hypoglycaemia and methacholine… vs Normal volunteers (controls)
Design
Cross-sectional

Altered autonomic signaling in thyroid dysfunction should not yet change practice; hypothesis-generating and requires prospective validation.
How do plasma cAMP and cGMP responses to insulin-induced hypoglycaemia and methacholine differ between hyperthyroid, hypothyroid, and normal individuals?
The study suggests that both beta-adrenergic and cholinergic receptor responses are enhanced in hyperthyroidism, as evidenced by exaggerated cAMP and cGMP responses.
Okada et al. (1980) studied this question.
