Changes in the field’s alpha function

The Field’s Alpha Function is a concept in Post-Bionian Field Theory. In this article, I review the term, the transition in Field Theory from a personal function to a function of the field, and its role in Bion’s framework. This concept allows us to define changes within the field, including development, regression, and a neutral position. I illustrate these movements through clinical vignettes. By defining these changes, we can assess growth or regression in the patient’s capacity for containment, which is the primary goal of treatment.
