The Hall mobility and the free electron density in sintered layers of have been measured as a function of photoexcitation intensity, temperature, and ambient atmosphere. Both free carrier density and Hall mobility are reduced by the adsorption of oxygen and increased by the desorption of oxygen. The magnitudes of the effects are such that in all cases the Hall mobility change due to adsorption contributes significantly to the photoconductivity change. Effects associated with photoadsorption of oxygen are reversible by annealing in vacuum. Results can be consistently described in terms of the model for chemisorption of oxygen on sintered layers proposed by Shear, Hilton, and Bube.
