Investigates interactive process exploration improvements in process mining, suggesting innovative visual analytics methods.
The exploration of large event log data in search of process insights and bottlenecks is at the heart of process mining (PM). This search is inherently based on combining the analytical power of automatic computations with the advanced reasoning skills of human domain experts. Yet, PM research tends to focus on algorithmic components, paying less attention to the human side of interactive process exploration facilitated through visual interfaces. Our paper is a call to action to strengthen the aspects of interactivity in process exploration. We propose to enhance process exploration with visual analytics (VA) methods that have so far not been considered in the PM community. Our work establishes conceptual links between PM and VA based on relevant interaction intents and user questions. Reviewing the level of support for these intents and questions in current PM tools reveals uninformed exploratory interactions as a key challenge. We outline how VA methods can help tackle this challenge and propose corresponding research directions towards better informed process exploration.
