Lesson explores technology's role in enhancing agricultural sustainability in high school students, indicating its educational value.
Factors Affecting Sustainable Agriculture is an 180-minute IB Biology lesson (grades 11–12, aligned with DP D3.1: Stability and Change) in which students explore what makes agriculture sustainable and how technology can improve it. They rotate through a gallery walk on soil erosion, agrochemicals, water use, biodiversity, and carbon footprint, then use Google Earth to investigate real farming systems worldwide (Iowa, California, Brazil, Netherlands, Kenya), tracking land use, irrigation, and environmental change over time. Students finish by designing a 3D model of a futuristic farm using AI, drones, robotics, and smart irrigation, justifying how it improves sustainability compared to traditional methods, and presenting their design with scientific reasoning. Includes group roles, formative/summative assessments, and digital tool integration.
