Compares energy consumption and yields of rice under IPM and conventional farming in Tamil Nadu, suggesting sustainable practices.
Integrated Pest Management (IPM) is a sustainable strategy gaining popularity in both conventional and organic agroecosystems. In Tamil Nadu, a major rice-growing state of India, evidence on scaling up IPM beyond demonstration plots is limited. Hence, this study was conducted in Tamil Nadu, using data from 195 farmers in 2020. A comparison of energy consumption between IPM and conventional Farmer’s Practice was conducted. Results showed that IPM farms achieved an average grain yield of 4.6 t/ha, compared to FP yields of 4.4 t/ha, while significantly reducing energy inputs and achieving a higher benefit-cost ratio. The findings indicate that IPM enhances energy productivity (12%), contributing to more sustainable agricultural practices.
