Qualitative discourse analysis explores how stigmatized motorcycle clubs gain local recognition, suggesting a complex relationship with societal norms.
This article examines how UK public texts grant narrow, local and reversible recognition to stigmatized outlaw motorcycle clubs (OMCs) through civic-performance narratives. Drawing on qualitative discourse analysis of 19 texts published between 2019 and March 2026, it considers portrayals of OMCs as charitable participants in hospital, school, memorial and food-poverty initiatives. These scenes do not produce full legitimacy or destigmatization. Instead, the article develops the concept of partial legitimacy: externally conferred, situationally bounded and audience-specific recognition under continuing stigma. It identifies an intermediate outcome in which outsider groups remain suspect yet become selectively useful and locally valued.
