Assesses financial sustainability and outreach in Indian microfinance institutions, indicating complexity in their relationship.
Microfinance institutions seek to maintain financial sustainability while extending financial services to underserved populations. Whether these objectives involve trade-offs or complementarities remains debated, particularly because financial sustainability is often treated as a single construct. Using an unbalanced panel of 87 Indian microfinance institutions, this study examines how financial sustainability, profitability, capital structure, operational characteristics, and governance are associated with outreach depth (serving underserved clients), outreach breadth (serving a broader client base), and gender-focused outreach. Panel data estimation techniques are employed, with fixed-effects estimation as the primary specification and Hausman–Taylor estimation as a robustness procedure. The findings indicate that different dimensions of financial sustainability, profitability, capital structure, operational characteristics, and governance are associated with outreach outcomes in distinct ways. Operational self-sufficiency is associated with broader but shallower outreach, whereas financial self-sufficiency is associated with broader outreach only. Neither dimension is associated with gender-focused outreach. The evidence further suggests that the sustainability—outreach relationship reflects neither a universal trade-off nor a universal complementary relationship. The study contributes to the institutionalist—welfarist debate by showing that neither perspective is universally supported; rather, their explanatory relevance depends on the organisational dimension under consideration, while offering guidance for policy and managerial decisions aimed at balancing financial sustainability with social outreach.
