Over the past decade, the demand for tourism in Jeju Island, a nature-based tourist destination, has risen sharply, and the rapid growth within a short period of time has caused various problems. For this reason, the tourism industry in Jeju, which has depended on quantitative growth, needs to constantly monitor and identify the demand trend In order to shift its management goal to qualitative growth. This study analyzed the changes of domestic and foreign tourists visiting Jeju Island since the year 2000 and predicted tourism demand for the next five years. First, as a result of analyzing the trend of changes in the tourism demand in Jeju, foreign demand was very sensitive to fluctuation of demand due to external factors such as infectious diseases and political issues compared to domestic demand, which contributed to increase instability of the Jeju tourism industry. Also, domestic demand has turned out to be opposite in the period when foreign demand declines or surges rapidly. Moreover, a vector error correction model (VECM) was used for demand forecasting, and GDP and WTI were used as the determinants of demand. As a result of the demand forecast, the demand for tourism in Jeju will exceed 20 million in 2023, and reasonable countermeasures should be prepared.
