A one credit-hour course in chemical safety has been piloted at our institution that emphasizes the development of “A Safety Culture.” The course includes in-depth coverage of chemical hazards, government regulations (EPA, OSHA, etc.), process hazards, and risk reduction – areas that will better prepare majors for chemical research in academics or industry. The course is appropriate for students pursuing careers in fields where chemicals and chemical processes are utilized. The primary focus of the course is based on best practices in the academic laboratory and The Laboratory Standard, but industry standards are also addressed.
