This article is intended to further the debate about geography's contribution to the school curriculum of the future. It begins by looking at geography's current situation and how and why it came about. Moving on to consider the future of geographical education in schools, the article proposes that a more explicit focus on geography's pre-eminent role in educating children and young people for sustainable development provides an opportunity to strengthen the subject's position. The coincidence of current curriculum changes, the second phase of the Action Plan for Geography and the Government's Sustainable Schools Strategy provides a challenge to which we must respond if we are to secure a sustainable future for geography in schools.
