Phagocytosis of urate crystals by polymorphynuclear leukocytes has previously been reported to be associated with the generation of a substance chemotactic for distant polymorphonuclear leukocytes. In the present studies, the chemotactic substance was not dialyzable and was not found after freeze‐thawing normal cells. It was detectable approximately 11 min after crystals were added to polymorphonuclear leukocytes, and the amount generated was proportional to the phagocytosis of crystals. Colchicine suppressed the generation of this chemotactic substance.
