The fundamentals and state of the art in fractional-Nphase-locked-loop (PLL)-based frequency synthesis are reviewed. Particular emphasis is placed on delta-sigma fractional-NPLLs and quantization noise and fractional spur suppression techniques for wide-bandwidth applications.
