The form of the uric acid present in the crystalline material of subcutaneous tophi in two gouty patients has been positively characterized as monosodium urate monohydrate by using x‐ray diffraction technics, while a urinary calculus was shown to contain free uric acid. The x‐ray diffraction powder patterns and d line values for the reference compounds uric acid, monosodium urate monohydrate, and disodium urate dihydrate are also presented.
