This report focuses on recent (1983–1986) developments in the study of the magnetospheres of the outer planets, Jupiter, Saturn, and Uranus. I have attempted to review only that work published during the 1983–1986 quadrennium, and I have largely restricted the review to work done in the United States. The reference list reflects these selection criteria. A more complete topical review and earlier references can be found in the previous quadrennial reports on the magnetospheres of Jupiter (Birmingham, 1983) and Saturn (Schardt, 1983).
