This paper presents the results of a large scale cross-validation study of the TMJ Scale.TM The TMJ Scale is a 97-item self-report psychometric instrument that assesses the physical and psychosocial aspects of temporomandibular (TM) disorders. Various forms of reliability and validity are demonstrated in diverse population samples, including patients with andwithout TM disorders and non-patient normals. Results are compared with those found in previous TMJ Scale test construction studies, and only minimal differences are found. The test demonstrates a high degree of stability andinternal consistency, along with good convergent and predictive validity. The Global Scale is a reliable and accurate screening measure for TM disorders, in both patient and non-patient populations. The accuracy of the GlobalScale with clinical samples remains consistent across different age ranges. The TMJ Scale shows substantial promise as a multidimensional screening andassessment tool for both clinical use and research.
