Peptic ulceration was demonstrated in 131 of 283 consecutive urgent endoscopies carried out on patients with bleeding from the gastrointestinal tract. We compared the frequencies of recurrence of bleeding and of emergency operations in patients with peptic ulceration between those with and without endoscopic signs of recent haemorrhage. We found the presence of signs of recent haemorrhage to be a significant indicator of the need for an emergency operation in patients with peptic ulceration.
