Recent developments in some of the most important fields of the analytical chemistry of coal and its derivatives are critically reviewed: separation methods; in particular gel‐permeation, high‐pressure liquid and gas chromatography, 13 C‐nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy, u.v. visible spectrophotometry, fluorimetry and phosphorimetry. Progress in statistical structural analysis, based on both chemical reactions and physical methods, usually n.m.r., is also comprehensively reported.
