Study examines the evolution of web metrics in Luxembourg, linking it to online advertising growth and methodological challenges.
The study examines how web metrics became professionalised in Luxembourg from the 1990s to 2005, linking national developments to the rise of the online advertising industry. It traces key actors, practices, and international influences to show how measurement tools and standards gradually shaped the country’s digital landscape. It also reflects on the methodological difficulties of conducting a diachronic analysis of website metrics and user experience, including efforts to identify the most popular sites of the period. These challenges stem from fragmented sources, ambiguous indicators, and structural limits of web archives, such as incomplete records and temporal or spatial inconsistencies. In order to navigate these obstacles, the article identifies the importance of drawing on a variety of materials, including self-published website data preserved in web archives, press reports on site traffic, and oral histories, notwithstanding the acknowledgement of the biases and limitations inherent in such sources. Collectively, these perspectives offer insight into the historical trajectory of web metrics in Luxembourg and the methodological complexities of studying the audience and user perspective over time.
