An experimental investigation was made of the output characteristics of a laser utilizing the 4 I 11/2 → 4 I 13/2 transition in the Er 3+ ion in YAlO 3 . The lasing efficiency was found to be 0.8%. The minimum threshold pump energy for durations of 100 µ sec amounted to 0.5 J/cm. Quasicontinuous operation of the laser was observed.
