True SA nodal atrophy in elderly, unlike interstitial expansion during growth, may underlie sinus node dysfunction; hypothesis-generating for arrhythmia mechanisms.
The apparent involution of SA nodal cells during growth is due to increased interstitial tissue, whereas true atrophy of SA nodal cells occurs during aging.
