A new type of optical transition called a magnon sideband has recently been observed in several antiferromagnetic insulators. A general discussion of such transition is given and the experimental literature is reviewed. Sidebands have been identified by their line profiles, magnetic-field behavior, stress behavior, and temperature dependence. Examples illustrating the results of such experiments are presented. A number of unsolved problems and topics deserving further study are briefly noted.
