A bstract It is shown experimentally that if a minute area of a large piece of glass is tested for tensile strength, the stress supported is comparable with that of fine glass fibers and is some fifty or one hundred times the “strength” of the large piece tested in any of the ordinary ways. The experiment consists in pressing a small steel ball upon the glass surface, and so stressing, in tension, a minute annular zone around the circle of contact.
