It is shown that the Lyman-Birge-Hopfield bands of nitrogen represent a forbidden ¹Πg-¹Σg⁺ transition. A considerable difficulty in the interpretation of the electronic states of N₂ by electron configurations is thus removed. A revised electronic energy level diagram of N₂ is given.
