The usual result for the Compton profile intensity, relating it to the momentum distribution of the electrons in the scatterer, is derived by a simple photon theory, based on energy and momentum conservation laws. The result is shown here to follow from the wave-mechanical scattering theory of Waller and Hartree provided: (i) a one-electron approximation is adopted, (ii) electronic binding energies are assumed small compared with the energy transfer from the photon, (iii) the electron wave functions for the relevant continuum states are approximated by plane waves.
