Purpose This paper aims to address the issues of ambiguous parameter design of resonant converter and unclear mapping relationship between the switching frequency and the output gain of the resonant tank, and proposes a parameter-interchangeable design model for two second-order resonant converters. Design/methodology/approach Based on the energy conservation principle, this paper establishes design models for the series resonant converter and the parallel resonant converter, respectively. Using these models, the relationship between the output gain and the resonance parameters can be directly derived and the design steps of the resonant components can be simplified. Furthermore, an interchangeable design model for the resonant parameters is proposed, enabling the two resonant tanks to be used interchangeably without altering the output dynamic characteristics of the resonant tanks. Findings To verify the correctness of the parameter design model, a 200 W power supply prototype is developed and validated through both simulation and experimentation. The experimental results demonstrate that the prototype achieves soft switching, and the output voltage gain of the resonant tank aligns well with the theoretical calculation and simulation results. In addition, the experiments confirm the validity of the parameter interchange design model. The series and parallel resonant tanks designed based on the model exhibit similar output gain characteristics and can be used interchangeably. Originality/value The feasibility of the proposed scheme is experimentally validated, demonstrating its significant potential to simplify the design process of resonant parameters. Furthermore, a parameter interchange model for the two resonant converters is established, providing a theoretical foundation for the interchangeable design of different resonant tanks.
