S ummary A functional Krebs tricarboxylic acid cycle was demonstrated to exist in rabbit reticulocytes by the following methods: Measurement of the rate of oxygen consumption of the cells, using acetate and succinate as substrates. Demonstration of the Crabtree effect exerted by glucose on cellular respiration. Following the metabolic pathway of [2‐14 C]acetate, [3‐14 C]pyruvate and [6‐14 C]glucose and measuring the formation of labelled CO2 by the cells. The effects of some inhibitors of mitochondrial activity on this pathway were also studied. Demonstration of the conversion of labelled acetate into various intermediates of the Krebs cycle by chromatography and autoradiography.
