The text of Ex 34:6-7 –a decisive text to recognize the identity of the God of Israel– contains a tension between mercy and punishment. These pages show that covenant is the frame that makes this tension comprehensible. In the «covenant,» one gets to understand that God punishes in order to heal; that punishment is necessary because there is a «contradiction in man» that needs to be unmasked and discovered; that punishment is not a destruction, but a beneficial correction made by the Father. A comparison between Ex 34 and Is 54 helps to illustrate more clearly the «theological place» in which the «form of mercy» of Ex 34:6-7 emerged.
