Custom power devices are required to maintain the power quality due to the ongoing energy consumption and growing network complexity. This article leads to the presentation of dynamic voltage restorers (DVR) core structures, different topologies, modes of operation, control strategies, energy management, and the detailed design process. Generally speaking, this power device provides a consistent and dependable energy supply in distribution networks while addressing voltage-related power quality problems like sag, swell, transients, distortion, and interruptions. Firstly, a synopsis of voltage-related power quality concerns has been provided, along with information on how they affect industrial operations and delicate appliances. The DVR system architecture is then provided, along with the several DVR topologies, such as transformer-less DVR, energy storage element-based DVR, interline DVR, solar photovoltaic energy integrated DVR, and AC to AC converter-based DVR. Furthermore, a detail discussion on the operational characteristics of several control methods, including switching pulse generation, voltage controller, reference voltage generation, voltage disturbance detection, and compensation strategies included. This review article aims to provide a comprehensive understanding of DVR technology, its challenges, energy management, and future advancements. It serves as a valuable resource for researchers, engineers, and professionals exploring DVR integration with renewable energy in modern power systems.
