Growth rates of Amphistegina lessonii and A.lobifera in the laboratory under similar conditions were similar and were light dependent. Amphistegina lessonii was photoinhibited in full sunlight. Both species showed relatively similar, high rates of 14C uptake at 30-80% of full sunlight, and sharply decreasing rates at lower light intensities. Amphistegina lobifera, which is typically the shallower-dwelling species, required higher light intensities than A.lessonii for reproduction in culture.
