Dialdehyde starch, dialcohol starch, dicarboxyl starch and other related dialdehydes, underwent mercaptolysis readily with mercaptoacetic acid. The products were isolated and purified in good yield. The products having free carboxyl groups were titrated with standard base and form brucine, anilide and pyridinium derivatives. The mixtures of mercaptals were fractionated on T. L. C. and by chemical means.
