The first case of a Ph1-negative chronic myelocytic leukemia with a missing Y chromosome from bone marrow cells is described. It is speculated that the benign course of the disease is due to the loss of the Y chromosome. Evidence is presented that the loss of the Y chromosome occurs on the stem cell level. No other anomalies could be detected by various banding techniques.
