A simple gas-supply line is described which allows a high voltage to be maintained across its ends at gas pressures in the gas line at which electrical breakdown would normally occur. It consists of a series of insulated electrically conducting tubes across which resistors are connected in a similar manner to the dynode resistor chain of a photomultiplier. In the present application a voltage of 2.5 kV is maintained across the ends of the gas line, but this may readily be increased.
